What Every Way of Raising Money Will Cost You

All Means, the forthcoming second Guide, on a marble table

The cover is set. The book is in its consultations.

Every dollar arrives with something attached.

A promise made to get it, a report owed after it, and a change, sometimes small and sometimes not, in what the organization is willing to do. All Means is about that attachment, one way of raising money at a time.

Donations, grants, government funding, earned revenue, sponsorship, membership, events, endowments, and the rest. For each, what it asks of a board before the money arrives, what it costs to keep, and what it quietly does to the mission over a decade. Written, like Charitable Ends, for the volunteer director who has to decide and the person who has to carry it out.

Why there is no date

The first draft is complete. Before it prints, parts of it go to the communities it describes, because where a book depicts a community the house is not part of, that community holds the gate. The date follows the conversations, not the other way round.
